You know you have Sports Business on the brain, when watching a game becomes a case study, discussion, and something to explore.
With the option of the Field Pass with Pat McAfee and his team or the traditional broadcast, the Michigan - Alabama Rose Bowl viewing choice was an easy decision. Personally, I love what the non-traditional broadcast is bringing. Options like the Manning Cast and McAfee's Field Pass are bringing different emotion, different angles, and also some serious fan-like reactions. They are also able to drop in guests, both traditional and less traditional, which add entertainment and interesting perspectives. Do they miss a play here and there because they are chatting? Yes. Do they give you the ultimate play by play? No. Is this for everyone? No.
Broadcasters like ESPN offering multiple viewing options for big events is not going away! The Nickelodeon simulcast of the Chiefs - Raiders Christmas Day game was quite the success. Coach Andy Reid was picked up by a Claw Machine and of course Slime was at the center of the action. Utilizing alternate broadcasts to target a unique group of fans has some great advantages. People are watching less on traditional screens and using more less traditional screens. Utilizing social media, fans are following highlights, connecting with other fans, commenting on the action, and continuing to go about their business. These new broadcast styles are bridging that divide. Combining the traditional TV consumption with the modern fan.
Is this just a Football thing? Nope.
Diana Turasi and Sue Bird drive an alternate broadcast for the NBA on Christmas. Mark Goldbridge created UnitedStand independently from the club and broadcasters to host "watch alongs" where you can interact with other passionate supporters while viewing the match elsewhere.
What is the future of this? How do these broadcasts influence the more traditional coverage? Will we ever see the alternative broadcast become the primary? What are some other examples? What is the potential for growing leagues like MLS, WNBA, NWSL? What is the potential for leagues in stagnation like MLB? How do these types of broadcasts impact RSN (Regional Sports Networks like YES in NY area)
